Are you over 17?: Yep!
Characters in Forest Covered: None at this time!
( CHARACTER INFORMATION )
Name/Work Name: Yui («Yui-MHCP001») / Sei (精)
Canon: Sword Art Online
Canon Point: Post Fairy Dance arc / Post SAO Season 1
AU/CRAU: Nope!
Age: Looks 8-10 years old, but was created at least 2-3 years ago. Mentally years ahead of her age, either way, though still a child at heart.
History:
- «Yui-MHCP001»
- «Cardinal System»
- «Navigation Pixie»
Personality:
"Unpermitted to come into any tangible contact with them, I reluctantly continued with nothing but the monitoring of the condition of the players' mental health. With that contradiction of having the sense of duty, yet the lack of authority to do so, I was gradually flooded with errors, and broke down..."
During the events that had to do with the VRMMO «Sword Art Online» («SAO» for short), Yui was meant to be tasked with brainwave monitoring to examine emotions and psychological concerns, addressing them personally in-game if necessary. Because she was an AI being ordered by a higher AI, and because she was not intended to act beyond scripted code, she obeyed without question, though she noticed her contradiction instantly once she was told not to interfere with the playerbase. As it takes up much of her life history, the two years she spent there changed her dramatically, and if it weren't for two certain people, she would have likely become too corrupted for the «Cardinal System» to ignore, and become deleted, without anything further to look forward to. Because of that and how they saved her from being deleted later on, she is especially grateful to said people, who have become a great fixture of her life.
"In that darkness... During that long suffering where I did not even know the end of, the existence of Papa and Mama was my only solace."
When she found herself changing, becoming sentient, it was due to the actions of those two people, Kirito and Asuna, over those same two years. They were able to do for her what she could not do for anyone, having regressed in expression to the point where she could only act like a toddler. Feeling protected around them, she called them as if they were her parents, sparking the beginning of her evolution past a scripted AI into a learning machine through the act of being literally reborn. This change of devotion from the «Cardinal System» to the young couple is marked by her belief in the two of them, being capable of so much against stacked odds. Even with her language faculties restored, she continues to call those two people, Kirito and Asuna, as if they were her parents. Sometimes, she lets her use of Standard Japanese slip so she can act like she did before the grand lie of her existence was revealed.
"Program...? Do you mean an AI...?" -Asuna
This has been mostly resolved by now, but at one point she considered herself undeserving of human affection, being an AI when Asuna and Kirito were thinking of her as a human being. When she did this, she distanced herself from them emotionally, calling them Asuna-san and Kirito-san. This is a sign she is capable of complex human behavior, mixing logic with emotion to judge herself and feel guilty as a result. Since then, due to their feeling that she should be able to state what she wants without restraint and being reassured that they love her all the same, she has taken a very simplistic approach to her human nature, or at least she does if it concerns her parents. She is aware that humans go about their desire for affection, for another's heart, in convoluted ways due to her constant experience of human emotions in the past, and demonstrates how actually simple it can be to Leafa during the Fairy Dance arc by plainly kissing Kirito on his cheek.
"You love your papa?"
"Lyfa, what is love?"
"....It's a feeling of wanting to be together. And when you are together, your heart beats faster, or something like that...."
"I'm back. What happened?"
"Welcome back, papa. We were just talking about who she likes and—,"
"Hey, we were not!!"
Yui is still learning quite a bit about humans and the worlds they live in, both virtual and real. She is aware enough that everyone has their own ideas of what concepts mean to them, particularly demonstrated when she asks Leafa about her version of what love is. She already knows what it means for herself concerning Kirito and Asuna: They protected her no matter what, and care for her life dearly. She returns that feeling in kind, to the extent of having allowed herself to be sacrificed so that they could survive during the events of Morning Dew Girl Side Story, the main source of her Aincrad arc canon before Fairy Dance arc, and still disobeys imposed limits set by other people or entities if they stop the three of them from being together, such as when she stubbornly refused to be left behind when they descended into «Black Iron Palace»'s dungeon, and when she borrowed code not meant for her in order to bypass administrative locks within «ALfheim Online» («ALO» for short). Even so, she welcomes knowing about differing viewpoints, sometimes even assimilating them, such as her feeling of Kirito being "carefree as ever" after Asuna mentioned it.
"Papa, I'd really advise that you at least read the instruction manual."
"Why you, I said no cheating, papa!"
Perhaps because of how she sees her parents, while she cheers them on as much as possible due to her unwavering belief, it distresses her when they don't match up to her image of them, though on lighter terms she resorts to teasing instead of lecturing. In that regard, she is rather selfish and that is one of the most indicative signs of her behavioral age and evolution of her AI, behaving very much like a real girl who loves her parents and wants to monopolize their affection, though making a few exceptions over time as she grows to understand and accept others, Leafa (better known as Kirito's cousin, Suguha) being the first of a growing list, though her intuition told her that she didn't have much to worry about from her in the first place when Kirito wasn't all that affected by her presence. She still gets bothered if Lisbeth, Silica, and most other female players close to Kirito are around him, mainly due to knowing that he tends to get nervous around those who have opened their heart to him. There is little record of her interactions with Asuna in kind, but it's easy to assume that she would act the same way with her as well concerning male gamers, especially because Asuna tends to have a popular online presence.
Debt:
Yui's foster parents,Kirito Jin and Asuna Aki (whom she lovingly calls Papa & Mama even if she's aware of their true!names) are here with debts of their own to pay. What other reason is necessary? Oh, and whatever makes it possible for her to be here as well - she's a ridiculously powerful and sentient AI, what do?
(The real foremost debt: Learning that her parents are in Koriko instead of where they should be, she took up work as well to help them go back. Too bad for her, that idea got complicated - the witch decided to twist it by mentioning that they also had their own debts to pay, and wondered if the girl would be willing to help them out as well. It's not a lie by any means, but she'll be a useful cash cow so long as she doesn't figure out she's taking up more than necessary. Yet, it's already too late for "Sei" to realize in some ways - namely by accepting the contract in the first place and creating a huge debt, however right a decision it might have felt. If the parents clear either of their debts first, which is more likely, she'll still have to work for herself to return... would she be able learn her name and win her freedom, alone? This is the witch's true bet.)
Suitability:
Yui would be bothered, as well as reminded how restricted the «Cardinal System» made her feel before she rebelled against it, if her servitude to the witch is brought to topic. As she has made the ultimate sacrifice once before, in the end she doesn't care whether taking matters into her own hands would get her into trouble, so long as "Papa & Mama" are protected. In fact, it would be the very threat that acting out of line would cause them to stay longer than intended (or worse) that keeps her in check, for now. In this way, she's not content with the situation, but since her parents are here and she's able to enjoy herself with them, maybe she can believe they're already in a "real world". After all, it's their new reality, possibly for another long time.
Previous Game Info: If you're applying from a CRAU, here's your time to shine. Tell us about the game that they were in, their experiences there, and their development, along with their major CR.
Inventory:
- A snow-white dress as seen here. As it was the only piece of clothing to survive her own actions against the boss monster «The Fatal Scythe», it might be indestructible or even inseparable from her avatar without a data rewrite, being given a true body, or simply "magically" removed by the witch. However, it can be hidden if other clothing is worn.
- A clothing set for her «Navigation Pixie» form, seen here. Also assumed to be indestructible/inseparable without a data rewrite, being given a true body, or simply "magically" removed by the witch.
Abilities, Strengths, and Weaknesses:
Yui's outward appearance is of an unnatural quality: Her frail-looking body, silk-like black hair, and silver-bell-esque soft tones of her voice, together with her simple dress and attentive eyes give off the vibe of something more akin to a mythical fay than a human being (a notion that makes shapeshifting into a «Navigation Pixie» rather appropriate for her). That combined image, along with her warm disposition and affinity for empathy, generally disarms and placates those she encounters, a collective set of traits that was purposely intended from her creation and role to address psychological concerns directly within «SAO» as part of the «Mental Health - Counselling Program». Alongside that, her tendency of Hyojungo (標準語), Standard Japanese, allows her to be easily understood by anyone she attempts to converse with, barring other communication barriers, and is in itself very practical in conveying instructions or descriptions.
As she is within the framework of the «Cardinal System»-using VR Network, The Seed Nexus (named after the VR programming platform suite «The Seed»), the AI named Yui holds a significant amount of ability compared to the typical user. Specifically within «ALO», she technically has limited Administrator access, borrowed from a System Access Card she transcribed code from. In addition, while she no longer has the kind of Game Master access granted to her from her time in «SAO», notably being now unable to directly monitor a user mentally as well as incapable of using most GM tools, she has an uncanny ability to "read" people's feelings from the amount of information she absorbed monitoring brainwaves of many users for two years, reinforced by the acute curiosity and natural empathy she possesses. When she gained the ability to transform into a «Navigation Pixie», she was capable of directly interacting with the environmental data of «ALO», being able to sense and pinpoint monsters, other users, landmarks and locations at a much more considerable distance than normal players could, as well as act as a complete game guide and tutor of game mechanics for players. Even normally, she can still interpret the data of nearby users, objects, and the environment to check for server-side-related information, and can even collect information within the Nexus network itself, as can be seen during the later events of Phantom Bullet arc.
Conveniently, she is also flagged as an Immortal Object, and thus any attempt to harm or destroy her through normal in-game means are outright repelled. Unfortunately, she is still under the mercy of those with Administrator rights, and has been targeted for deletion twice so far, once in «SAO» by the «Cardinal System» itself and once more in «ALO» by Sugou Nobuyuki. Therefore, she still has vulnerabilities within the system despite her seemingly ludicrous nature virtually, and anyone who is able to find a way to grant themselves such higher access might be able to think of her as a puppet on strings, provided she cares enough to obey. (Of course, should anything malicious be attempted on her, she has the safety of Kirito's «NerveGear» in the real world to retreat her data into for protection— ah, but she no longer has that sort of safety net here in Koriko, does she?)
Take all of that away from her though, and you end up with a very young, brave, and above-all curious little girl. Specifically, that curiosity of hers is indeed double-edged: If someone manages to lie or lead her on, that drive for more experiences to learn from can get her into unintended trouble on her part, especially if she finds herself defenseless against what might come from that. That said, she rarely leaves the side of her surrogate parents or others she trusts whenever possible, so it can be difficult to isolate her. However, her parents especially are also a double-edged facet of her life, as while she might draw her own light from theirs, if one can control them there's a good chance at controlling her as well, unless she's aware of and able to either expose or defeat the chain that binds them to the controller.
